HYROX, an indoor fitness competition that exploded in popularity across the world in recent years, held its three-day Hong Kong event that saw the participation of close to 20,000 people. Organisers hope the athletic competition could be made into one of the city's mega events. Parts of AsiaWorld-Expo was transformed into a giant gym these last few days to facilitate Hong Kong's fitness fanatics. The event kicked off with a one-kilometre race before athletes ensued to push themselves to their physical limits with the Ski Erg and Sled Push. Their endurance was also tested through burpee jumps and the Row Erg. Athletes are required to run in all eight stations of the event, which adds up to a total distance of eight kilometres. Local participant May said the final station of the wall ball was the most difficult, adding that she suffered from cramps as a result of the exhaustion. With close to 20,000 people joining the three-day event, the competition saw its participation doubled on a year-on-year basis. Some 30 percent of them were made up of overseas competitors coming from 60 countries, including certain reality show celebrities from South Korea. Several of these foreign participants shared their experiences. The vibe -- awesome. There are so many people here. It's more than other competitions I've been in. It was great -- we loved it. It was a great experience. Created in 2017, HYROX rapidly grew in popularity the following year after holding its first competition in Germany. Introduced in Hong Kong just some three years ago, the organisers hope HYROX could be classified as a mega event in the future. They added that the participation quota is expected to increase to 30,000 next year, and are considering to set up events for the age group of 8 to 15.
