A fireworks factory explosion in Liuyang, Hunan, which killed 37 people and injured over 50, has revealed serious safety lapses.

CCTV reported safety equipment inside the factory was severely inadequate. Some explosive materials were stored carelessly. Workers had even posted talismans reading "safety and peace" around the premises.

Reporters visiting the site found total devastation. Collapsed buildings and burnt vehicle remains. Anti-static equipment, crucial in such a high-risk industry, was covered in dust and apparently unused.

Officials noted inspections had already identified safety hazards 18 times out of 24 checks since 2022, including as recently as January.

Although Liuyang introduced enhanced monitoring with over 70,000 surveillance devices across 431 companies, authorities admitted the system was ineffective.

Experts say relying on symbolic protections instead of proper safety measures is inadequate. The report also highlighted repeated fireworks-related accidents in Liuyang since 2019, pointing to longstanding regulatory gaps and calling for stricter enforcement and heavier penalties to prevent future tragedies.
