Saint Francis University will send off its first batch of Bachelor of nursing degree's applied programme graduates on Saturday. This is one of the mock-up hospital wards at Saint Francis University.

Each bed lies a manikin used to imitate a real patient, with a single one costing nearly one million dollars.

These clinical practice teaching equipment are for students of the Bachelor of nursing degree and its applied degree. Unlike the bachelor's programme, which spans over five years, the applied course lasts 3.5 years.

Introduced in 2022, the applied degree programme allows students to become registered nurses upon graduation. And the programme will send off its first batch of graduates -- 160 of them on Saturday.

The university said that the teaching structure of the 3.5-year programme differs from the conventional one, as students begin practical work in their final year, which could be more effective.

Eric Chan, Dean, SK Yee School of Health Sciences, SFU, said, "When we have these 1,400 (clinical practice) hours in a long stretch, they can learn and they can remember those learning in a better way. I think it's a breakthrough in terms with learning with continuity."

The faculty said they had received 8,000 applications for the nursing degree for the 2026/27 academic year.

But the degree's admission quota is set at 640, with two-thirds of it reserved for DSE students applying through the JUPAS system.

Apart from public hospital wards and manikin patients, the department also incorporates VR elements into their teaching.

Students can consolidate their practical skills in this mock-up, subdivided unit. The university said that such a teaching setting can allow students to handle difficult situations, including how to take care of patients in narrower confines.
