Media mogul Ted Turner has died at the age of 87. Founder of CNN, Ted Turner could never be defined by just one role. He was also a philanthropist and conservationist, a yachtsman who won boating's most famous race and owner of a baseball team that captured the World Series trophy.

Ted Turner transformed an obscure Atlanta television station into the first satellite-based superstation and founded Cable News Network the first 24-hour, all news TV network.

He was also an activist for the environment and donated one billion US dollars to support the United Nations to tackle climate change and promote sustainability.

CNN Founder Ted Turner previously said, "If we don't do something about it, we're going to die, so it's very important. I like living, and I want everybody else to be alive - and not just us, but the trees and the birds and the animals, they're going to all die too. We don't want to kill all life on earth. This could be the only place in the universe where life exists."

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said "Turner believed in the United Nations and its purpose at a defining moment and he invested in that mission".

Spokesperson for Guterres said, "The Secretary-General was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ted Turner, a visionary whose conviction, whose generosity, and whose audacious spirit left lasting imprint on the United Nations and our world. Ted Turner believed in the United Nations' and its purpose at a defining moment, and he invested in that mission. Ted Turner bet on humanity and in the process helped strengthen the security of his own country and reinforced our common values. Quite simply, Ted Turner was the foundation of the United Nations Foundation. Ted's $1 billion commitment to the U.N. and subsequent creation of the United Nations (foundation) changed the nature of philanthropy."

Turner was married three times and has five children with his first two wives, his third wife was actress Jane Fonda who he was married to for 10 years.

The brash Southerner owned sports teams and was a champion yacht racer. He was one of America's most extensive landowners who US President Donald Trump called "one of the all-time greats."

Turner died surrounded by his family according to Turner Enterprises, the company that oversees his vast business interests.
