US President Donald Trump says Wednesday that dialogue with Iran has been effective and the two sides will reach an agreement. This coming after a US strike on an Iranian-flagged oil tanker the same morning.

On Wednesday US President Donald Trump said to reporters at the Oval Office that he's had "very good talks" with Iran over the past 24 hours and a peace deal is possible.

This comes at the heel of a US attack on an Iranian-flagged oil tanker.

US Central Command said in a social media post that the vessel was transiting international waters en route to an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman Wednesday morning.

This as the US blockade against ships attempting to enter or depart Iranian ports remains in effect.

Despite the attack, the president says Iran wants a deal "badly" and that an end to the two-month long war is possibly on the horizon.

U.S. President Donald Trump said,"So they had a Navy with 159 ships and now every ship is blown to pieces and lying at the bottom of the water. They had an air force, lots of planes, and they don't have any planes. They don't any anti-aircraft. They don't have any radar left. Their missiles are mostly decimated. They have some. They have probably 18, 19 percent, but not a lot by comparison to what they had. And their leaders are all dead. So I think we won. And now we're doing well. Now we have to get what we have to get. If we don't do that, we'll have to go a big step further. But with that being said, they want to make a deal. We've had very good talks over the last 24 hours. And it's very possible that we'll make a deal."

Trump says there's "never a deadline" for Iran to strike a deal, but maintains they cannot have nuclear weapons.

These comments from Trump came just hours after he threatened Iran on social media with bombings "at a much higher level and intensity than it was before" if they do not agree to a deal.

A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry told state TV that it was still examining the latest proposal, and that it would soon share its views with Pakistani mediators.
