China's top diplomat on Thursday met with a US senate delegation visiting Beijing, this ahead of President Donald Trump's expected trip to the country. Foreign Minister Wang Yi says face-to-face communication is the starting point for building trust between the two countries, while American senators urge stability and cooperation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi greets the US bipartisan congressional delegation at the Great Hall of the People earlier today. This meeting comes ahead US President Donald Trump's anticipated upcoming trip to Beijing on May 14 and 15. Addressing the US delegation, Wang says direct dialogue increases mutual understanding between the two countries and that President Xi Jinping and Trump have spoken and met many times. "We are willing to work together with the US side to put into practice the consensus reached by the two heads of state, so that China-US relations can truly stabilise and improve, benefiting both countries and the world as well," Wang says. Head of the delegation US Senator Steve Daines says the US seeks to "de-escalate, not decouple" and wants "mutual respect," referencing Wang's meeting with Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi. "I want to thank you for the meeting that you had yesterday with the Iranian foreign minister. You were working to de-escalate tensions, to bring peace to the Middle East, to open up the Strait of Hormuz. And I want to thank you for your personal effort yesterday to that end to help us bring together a peaceful outcome from the current conflict in Iran." Daines also says he hopes the upcoming meeting between Xi and Trump will bring new Boeing jet purchase orders.
