In response to the recent hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius, the Department of Health says it will continue to conduct health checks at different border crossings.

This as infectious disease experts say despite the city having earlier recorded a case of hantavirus, the virus strain that is more prominent in Asia is not infectious.

Hong Kong recorded its last hantavirus case in 2018.

Infectious disease experts stressed the Seoul virus variant more commonly found in Asia has a mortality rate of 15 percent, with symptoms milder compared to the North American strain.

Dr. Joseph Tsang believes an outbreak is unlikely to happen in Hong Kong as long as the city manages to prevent rodent infestations.
