Two women in their sixties have been convicted of money laundering after transporting a total of 280 million dollars in cash into Hong Kong from the mainland. The case was heard in the District Court. One woman, who entered Hong Kong 692 times in a year, was sentenced to 58 months in jail. The other, who once entered the city 111 times over a two month period, was sentenced to 36 months in prison. They said they were carrying the money for third parties. The judge said the two were not the masterminds but their crimes allowed "black money" to flow into Hong Kong. The case marks the first time Customs has prosecuted travellers under the Cross-boundary Movement of Physical Currency and Bearer Negotiable Instruments Ordinance since it came into effect in 2018.
