Foreign Minister Wang Yi began a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Aragchi in Beijing Wednesday. Aragchi's one-day trip comes a week ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's expected visit to Beijing for a summit with President Xi Jinping. Wang Yi shook hands and then hugged Aragchi. The Chinese foreign minister held talks with his Iranian counterpart at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. On the agenda was the war between the US, Israel and Iran. In the meeting Wang said "We believe that a comprehensive ceasefire is urgently needed, that a resumption of hostilities is not acceptable, and that it is particularly important to remain committed to dialogue and negotiations." Wang Yi had spoken multiple times by phone to Aragchi expressing China's support for a ceasefire and negotiations. Before his visit, Aragchi also stated that he would exchange views with Wang Yi on bilateral relations between China and Iran as well as developments on the regional and international situation. This as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he hopes Chinese officials talk to Iran about the Strait of Hormuz during their visit this week. "On the first point about the visit, it's fine. I hope the Chinese tell him what he needs to be told. And that is that what you are doing in the straits is causing you to be globally isolated. You're the bad guy in this. You guys should not be blowing up ships. You should not putting mines. You should be holding hostage, trying to hold hostage to the global economy. I hope the Chinese bring, whether it's done privately, but I hope it's done directly, that that's the message they deliver to them."
