Pope Leo XIV rebuts Trump’s claim that the pontiff supports Iran having nuclear weapons

U.S. President Donald Trump has again criticised Pope Leo XIV, claiming the pontiff supports Iran possessing nuclear weapons.

In a radio interview on Tuesday, Trump alleged Pope Leo believed Iran should be allowed to have nuclear arms, saying such a position would endanger many Catholics.

Responding to the remarks, Pope Leo says the Vatican has always preached the Gospel of peace and opposed nuclear weapons.

Without naming Trump directly, he says anyone seeking to criticise him must do so on the basis of truth and facts.

Both CNN and Time magazine report that Pope Leo has never publicly said he would accept Iran possessing nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit the Vatican and Italy from Wednesday to Friday. Rubio says the trip had long been scheduled and will focus on the Middle East situation, rather than easing tensions between Washington and the Holy See.
