Iran's jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been taken to hospital after what her family described as a "catastrophic deterioration" of her health.

53-year-old Mohammadi won the award in 2023. She was arrested in December during a visit to Mashhad City and sentenced to an additional seven years of imprisonment.

Mohammadi's family said her health was worsening, part because of a beating she endured in prison and high blood pressure, adding that she had fainted twice on Friday before being transferred to a hospital in Zanjan in northwestern Iran.

Voicing anguish, her husband Taghi Rahmani has condemned Iranian authorities for not caring about prisoners in the current wartime situation and noted Mohammadi's body doesn't have the readiness for imprisonment despite her mental resilience.

He said their two children, who're living in a foreign country without being able to see their mother for ten years, have become the biggest victims.
