Alex Zanardi, one of the most beloved motor racers, and later paralympian, died at the age of 59. The Italian was a Formula driver and later became a CART Indy Car champion in the late 1990s. His legs were severed in a racing accident in 2001, but it did not stop him from achieving more. Zanardi won more auto races using hand controls, and then he turned to hand cycling, where he became one of the most accomplished athletes in the world. He won four Paralympics medals, competed in the New York City marathon and set an Ironman record. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Zanardi had turned "every challenge of life into a lesson in courage, strength and dignity."
