Many residents head home on Sunday marking the end of a long weekend holiday. As of 4 pm on Sunday, more than 600,000 people arrived and left Hong Kong via different control points. About 169,000 mainlanders visited the city. On the third day of the Golden Week holiday, the West Kowloon Station's arrival hall was filled with passengers who arrived from the mainland. Some travelled light, while others carried suitcases. A lot of them were Hong Kongers, who came home on the last day of their three-day break to prepare for work and school on Monday. This man, who had spent the holiday in Huizhou, Guangdong, said his family decided to catch an earlier train to avoid the late crowds. He said that would also leave some time for his children to complete their homework. Similarly, this resident chose to arrive in Hong Kong before the evening because he thought travelling would be easier in the afternoon. The traveller added that the return ticket was difficult to secure and he was placed on a waiting list beforehand. For mainlanders, the holiday doesn't end until Tuesday. Many visited Sha Tin Racecourse to watch horse racing. Coming from Sichuan Province, this tourist said the racecourse was well-known. While she planned to leave Hong Kong later in the day, the woman said the venue was still worth a visit. The Immigration Department said more than 780,000 Hong Kong residents left the city on the first two days of the long weekend break -- an increase of nearly 30 percent compared to the same period of 2025. Separately, about 510,000 mainlanders arrived in Hong Kong over the past two days.
