The mainland's pioneering traffic management robot squad began their work on the first May Day holiday in Zhejiang Province's Hangzhou city.

Comprising 15 robots, the team could handle traffic control and answer questions related to road directions in hopes of assisting the local police force.

With just the touch of a finger, a clear map becomes available to any pedestrian traversing the roads of Hangzhou.

But this helpful guide in bright neon colours is not your regular police officer, but rather a member of the mainland's latest traffic management robot squad.

The 15-member team began their work assisting local residents and traffic at the city's West Lake scenic area on the first day of the May Day holidays.

Their efforts were primarily directed towards the popular tourist hotspots of the West Lake area's shopping and central districts.

Besides playing the role of a directions service provider, the robots also serve as an enforcement arm reminding motorists to strictly follow traffic rules.

This as the robotic "officers" also have a more "human" side to them -- as they often make heart-shaped signs to cheer up passing vehicles and other passers-by.

A local police officer said the robots are equipped with a police alarm that allows for direct connection to the force's command system.

This in turn boosts the efficiency of the police's ability to respond to community emergencies.
