Beijing and Guangzhou also saw travel surges as the five-day Golden Week kicks off. Crowds filled the concourse of Guangzhou South Railway Station. Many travellers hauled luggage. Long- and medium-distance routes to cities such as Changsha, Shanghai and Beijing were especially popular. On the first day of the holiday, the station is expected to handle 503,000 departures and about 2.9 million arrivals. Some Hong Kong residents also traveled to the mainland during the holiday. This man said meals were much cheaper than Hong Kong. At Beijing's International Airport, a surge in travellers too. The airport is expected to handle about 224,000 passengers in a single day, with around 1 million passengers and over 6,000 flights during the five-day holiday.
