The government will begin subsidising diesel prices for commercial vehicles at 3 dollars per litre from midnight on Thursday for two months.

Relief too for LPG-run public minibuses, taxis and school private light buses as announced by Financial Secretary Paul Chan today.

As fuel prices continue to climb, auto LPG also comes under pressure.

Average ceiling prices for LPG in April stood at 3 dollars 73 cents per litre, up one cent from the month before.

Financial Secretary Paul Chan says the ceiling price for next month is expected to jump by more than 1 dollar per litre -- an increase of over 28 percent.

That has prompted the government to roll out a two-month 50-cent-per-litre subsidy by the end of May to some LPG-fuelled commercial vehicles to ease their financial strain.

That's poised to benefit 17,000 taxis, 3,440 public minibuses and 170 school private light buses.

The three-dollar-per-litre diesel subsidy for commercial vehicles and vessels, meanwhile, will begin Thursday midnight until June 29th.

The government will reimburse fuel distributors for the price difference.

Secretary for Environment and Ecology TSE CHIN-WAN: "For all the changes in the oil prices, we can monitor and we know what the changes are. And therefore, with the reporting and the auditing system, we are very confident the oil companies will not be able to rip out the subsidies."

This cabbie welcomed the arrangement, saying that would mean savings of more than 10 dollars per shift.

Secretary for Environment and Ecology TSE CHIN-WAN: "This red minibus route running between Cheung Shan and Tsuen Wan had intended to raise fares by one dollar next month but decided to shelve the hike after the subsidy was announced."
