CU Medical Centre to repay $4bn loan early

CU Medical Centre will fully repay a government loan of over 4 billion dollars ahead of schedule, with in-principle approval from the government.

The loan repayment had previously been delayed twice, with repayment originally set to begin in March 2028. The Chinese University of Hong Kong, which wholly owns the hospital, together with hospital management, notified the government in writing last Wednesday that it will arrange internal financing or guarantees to repay the outstanding 4 billion dollars in full by March 19 next year.

The Legislative Council's Panel on Health Services will discuss the proposal next month. Four CUHK council members who are also lawmakers expressed optimism about the hospital's financial situation.
