Investigation reveals further details about White House dinner attacker, 31-year-old California man Cole Tomas Allen.

Law enforcement officials, who have examined the gunman's electronic devices and his writings, say he intended to target President Donald Trump and administration members at the White House Correspondents' dinner.

According to a message reviewed by The Association Press, the suspect described himself as a "Friendly Federal Assassin" in a text sent to family members moments before the shooting took place.

Investigation reveals the suspect is a highly educated tutor and amateur video game developer opposed to the policies of President Donald Trump. Social media posts that law enforcement official described as anti-Trump are linked to the suspect.

Allen is believed to have travelled from California to Chicago by train and then onto Washington, where he checked himself in as a guest at the hotel where the gala dinner was held, said acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. He is believed to have acted alone.

In California, FBI agents are now investigating his home.

Voter registration records from California lists the suspect's home address as his parent's house in one of the most historic neighbourhoods in Torrance, a city within the Los Angeles metro area.

On Saturday, the suspect attempted to charge into the ballroom at the Washington Hilton during the annual White House Correspondent's dinner but was tackled to the ground in a chaotic scene that resulted in shots being fired, President Donald Trump being hurried off the stage and guests ducking for cover beneath their tables.
