The White House has issued a memo, accusing China of large-scale theft of U.S. artificial intelligence technology.
China rejected the claim, calling it baseless and a smear against its AI achievements.
Ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's expected visit to China in mid-May, the White House released the memo, saying that foreign entities, mainly based in China, are shown to be conducting industrial-scale efforts to "distill" American AI systems.
"Knowledge distillation" is a technique in AI where outputs from larger models are used to train smaller models which helps trim development costs.
The memo adds that these operations involve tens of thousands of proxy accounts to evade detection.
In Beijing, the Foreign Ministry urged the U.S. to stop suppressing China's technological development, and do more to promote bilateral cooperation.
