Police arrested three people on suspicion of scamming mainland students over gold.

Police said all victims from the reported seven cases were mainland overseas students.

They received calls from scammers who claimed to be mainland police officers, informing the students that they had committed criminal offences.

The scammers then asked the students to pay legal bonds with gold.

After obtaining the gold, the syndicate turned the metal into cash and cryptocurrency, worth seven million dollars.

The police arrested three men, aged between 25 and 37, allegedly linked to four of those cases.

The force has managed to recover about five million dollars.
