Two US officials killed in a car crash as they returned from destroying a drug lab in northern Mexico over the weekend were working for the CIA, according to a US official and two other sources. Two Mexican investigators were also killed in the crash.

There have been discrepancies in the public accounts of what happened from US and Mexican officials which experts say underscores heightened American involvement in security operations in Mexico and across the region.

Questions grew Tuesday over a joint operation in northern Mexico after days of conflicting accounts between federal and Chihauhau state authorities about the role American personnel played in dismantling a clandestine drug laboratory.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she was not aware of any formal joint operation between Chihuahua state authorities and the United States, despite earlier claims by local officials that they had worked together which were later walked back after the operation came under scrutiny.

US officials and others familiar with the matter said the two Americans killed in the weekend car crash were working for the CIA.

The crash also killed two Mexican investigators, which occurred as the convoy was returning from efforts to dismantle an extensive outdoor lab in the Sierra de Chihauhau in northern Mexico.

Differing accounts of what happened have fuelled scrutiny and reignited debate over the extent of US involvement in Mexico's security operations.

Sheinbaum said federal prosecutors would also examine whether any laws including constitutional provisions or national security regulations were violated and called on state authorities to provide full and accurate information.

The developments come as Sheinbaum faces pressure from US President Donald Trump's administration to intensify efforts against drug cartels while maintaining Mexico's position on national security.
