The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health says risk of further local transmission is assessed as moderate following this year's first recorded case of dengue fever. The centre advises the public to take anti-mosquito measures and seek medical attention as soon as possible should individuals experience symptoms of fever or muscle pain, especially after travelling abroad. The majority of cases are said to be imported, though the emergence of local dengue fever case indicate there may have been undiagnosed imported cases. Dengue can spread when a mosquito bites an infected person, picks up the virus, and then transmits it to another person in a subsequent bite. With rising temperature and the onset of the rainy season, environmental conditions are ripe for mosquito breeding. Together with high incidences of mosquito-borne disease in Southeast Asia and nearby regions, the risk should not be overlooked though it remains preventable and controllable.
