An ammunition explosion this morning at a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force training area in Oita Prefecture leaves three people killed and one injured, the NHK reports.
The blast took place during a training exercise at the Hijudai manoeuvre area in southwestern Japan.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told reporters in Tokyo that a tank shell exploded in a Type 10 Main Battle Tank's turret during a training session.
The GSDF is investigating the details of the incident, including the condition of those involved and the cause of the explosion.
