The prospect of a second round of peace talks between the US and Iran remains uncertain.

This, as Tehran's chief negotiator said his country would not negotiate in the face of threats while US President Donald Trump offered mixed messages about the path ahead for Washington in the war against Iran.

Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf, Iran's chief negotiator and parliament speaker, wrote in a post on X early Tuesday that his country does not accept negotiations under the shadow of threats. He said the Islamic Republic has been preparing to reveal new cards on the battlefield.

US President Donald Trump indicated he still expects to dispatch his negotiating team, led by US Vice President JD Vance, to Pakistan's capital of Islamabad for talks.

That's even as Iran insisted it would not take part until the US President dialed back his demands.

Trump said he's "highly unlikely" to renew the ceasefire before it expires Wednesday.

However, a Pakistani source involved in the discussions told Reuters there was momentum for talks to get underway and Tehran was "positively reviewing" its participation but stressed no decision had been made.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the International Maritime Organization said the situation in waters near the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, urging vessels in the area to take maximum caution.

French president Emmanuel Macron said "France was not specifically targeted or attacked" after an incident involving a French container ship in the Strait on Sunday.

He said following the American decision to maintain a targeted blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian authorities changed their initial position. "I think this was a mistake on both side," said Macron.

He said no one was hurt on the French side, and called for calm to resolve the problems through diplomacy.
