Residents of Wang Fuk Court can go back to units more than once

Residents of seven buildings in Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po will be allowed to return to their homes in batches on Monday to collect their belongings. 

Deputy Secretary for Administration Cheuk Winghing said residents will be permitted to go up more than once.

More than five months after the Wang Fuk Court fire, residents of the seven affected buildings will finally able to return to their homes on Monday to collect their belongings.

The government previously announced that a maximum of four people per household could register to go upstairs, and they could only enter and exit together once, without counting the time spent going up and down the stairs, with a maximum stay of three hours.

Deputy Secretary for Administration Cheuk Winghing said on the day before the permitted visits that, after assessment, residents will be allowed to go up more than once.

Chuek said: “We recently reassessed the situation and, after discussions with various departments, believe that under normal circumstances, residents can be allowed to go up one more time to make it easier for them to retrieve their belongings. Based on considerations for protecting the property of other residents, this should be accompanied by police officers or the Civil Aid Service.

Whether it is possible to go up one more time really depends on the actual manpower available on site.”

He also pointed out that he recently received feedback from residents that some media outlets had invited them to join the list of those going upstairs, and they were worried about being disturbed. He emphasized the need to protect residents' privacy and appealed for respect for residents' feelings, urging them not to go upstairs to conduct interviews.

It is understood that after residents go upstairs to retrieve their belongings, they can temporarily store them at a nearby primary school.
