The Israeli military killed four Lebanese rescue workers and wounded six others in three consecutive, targeted strikes.

This, in a stark illustration of the human cost of the Israeli military campaign against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon a day after the two countries held historic talks in Washington.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the expansion of a so-called "buffer zone" in southern Lebanon.

The back-to-back Israeli attacks on the southern village of Mayfadoun, near the larger town of Nabatiyeh, hit the first group of medics responding to a distress call from wounded civilians, a second group trying to assist their wounded colleagues and a third group rushing to aid the first two teams that had been targeted.

The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment on the strikes beyond saying it was "looking into" what happened.

It has previously accused the Iran-backed Hezbollah of using ambulances as cover for militant activities, without offering evidence.

The Lebanese Health Ministry condemned the attacks as a "blatant violation" of international law.

Isabel DeBre, The Associated Press said: "The Lebanese Health Ministry has condemned this as a blatant violation of international law, saying medical facilities should never be a target under the Geneva Convention. We're still waiting for comment from the Israeli military on exactly what it was targeting in these strikes. And we know from the past that Israel has accused the Hezbollah militant group that it is fighting a war with in the south of using medical facilities and ambulances as cover for its militant activities. But it has not provided evidence of this and so far in this war, Israeli strikes have killed more than 91 health workers so far, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry."

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave an update on the conflict with Lebanon.

Netanyahu said he had ordered the Israeli military to expand its so-called "buffer zone" in southern Lebanon towards the east. He said Israel is pursuing negotiations with the Lebanese government alongside
its military campaign against Hezbollah in hopes of disarming the group and achieving a "sustainable peace" with its northern neighbour.

In Lebanon, those negotiations have drawn backlash from Hezbollah and its supporters.
