HK Tramways has launched a new mobile app. The tram operator hopes to improve the passenger experience by offering them more accurate information.

Trams are a key commute option for locals and a cultural attraction for tourists, with 85 percent of passengers being residents and the rest, visitors.

To improve the passenger experience, HK Tramways has launched a mobile app that can present arrival times and destination information for the next three trams at their selected stop.

The app will also notify users about sudden situations, including service disruptions and delays.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, HK Tramways said the app marks the company's journey to becoming digitalised.

Paul Tirvaudey, managing director of HK Tramways, said: "Passengers have increasing expectations in terms of passenger information. We are not looking to a complicated app. The goal is to be simple; to be user-friendly."

The tram company said the real-time estimation function requires the application of more than 400 radio frequency identification tags, or RFID. The tags are installed along the tram tracks and RFID readers on the trams.

Apart from the new app, the Hong Kong Tramways will also enhance its operational safety, including the installation of dashcams on all trams to record the front road conditions.
