Basketball betting rollout put on hold as govt studies emerging prediction markets

The government will pause the implementation of basketball betting, which was originally slated for a launch as early as September.
The bill, which was passed last year, legalise basketball betting in Hong Kong, in order to combat illegal betting.
The Home and Youth Affairs Bureau replied to our enquiries, saying that the rapid development of "prediction markets" may bring certainty to the gambling market.
Therefore, it said it is necessary for the government to conduct a deeper study into these emerging model and its platforms, in order to protect public interest.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club said it respects the government's decision and will await further instructions on the application for a basketball betting license.
