Hours after peace talks with Iran ended without a deal, US President Donald Trump declared the US Navy would start to blockade ships attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz, a choke point for about 20 percent of global energy supplies. He said in a social media post that the measure will take effect "immediately." Trump, who is against the idea of Iran collecting transit fees, added he had instructed the navy to seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran, saying "No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas." The US will also begin destroying mines that Trump said the Iranians laid in the strait.
