The Financial Secretary, Paul Chan, said that international geopolitical tensions have caused a global impact on energy supplies. The government will actively promote the green energy transition. The latest power-transmission system enhancement works are expected to be completed within this year, which will make it possible to introduce more zero-carbon electricity. Paul Chan said in a recent blog post that a cross-departmental task force established by the HKSAR government to monitor fuel supply has proposed four short-term measures, including subsidising diesel prices. The funding for this has already been approved swiftly by the Legislative Council, and the government is accelerating the implementation of the details. He said that in the long term and medium term, Hong Kong must continue to actively promote the green transition of its energy, including by strengthening regional cooperation and gradually expanding the share of zero-carbon energy. The government plans that by 2035, the proportion of electricity generation from zero-carbon energy will be raised to around 60–70%. The latest power-transmission system enhancement works are expected to be completed within this year; once completed, Hong Kong will be able to introduce more zero-carbon electricity in a phased manner.
