President Xi Jinping has met with Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan's largest opposition party Kuomintang in Beijing Friday morning. President Xi Jinping, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, met with Cheng Li-wen, Chairperson of Taiwan's Kuomintang at about 11 AM in the East Hall of the Great Hall of the People. The two shook hands and exchanged greetings. This is the first meeting between the leaders of the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang in nearly ten years. The two sides then held talks. Xi welcomes Cheng and her delegation on behalf of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee. Xi Jinping said the roots of Taiwan compatriots are always on the mainland, and this meeting is of great significance to the cross-strait relations between the two parties. Xi said the world today is undergoing rapid changes, but no matter how the international situation or the situation across the Taiwan Strait changes, the great trend of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation will not change, and the great trend of compatriots on both sides of the Strait getting closer and coming together will not change. Xi said today's world is not peaceful, and peace is extremely precious. Compatriots on both sides of the Strait are one family. Xi Jinping said "To promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and enable future generations to share a better future, we are willing to work with all political parties and groups in Taiwan, including the Kuomintang, and people from all walks of life, on the common political basis of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," to seek peace across the Taiwan Strait, seek the well-being for our compatriots, and seek the rejuvenation for the nation." Cheng Li-wun said based on the common political basis of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," the Communist Party of China and the Kuomintang should jointly promote cross-strait peace. Cheng said both sides should transcend political confrontation and jointly rethink and construct a community of shared future for mutual benefit and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait. She said the two sides should seek a systemic solution to prevent and avoid war, making the Taiwan Strait a model for peaceful conflict resolution worldwide. Cheng said she hopes that through the efforts of both the Kuomintang and the Communist Party of China, the Taiwan Strait will no longer be a focal point of potential conflict, nor a chessboard for external intervention. The Taiwan Strait will be a strait connecting kinship, civilization, and hope. Cheng Li-win led a delegation to the mainland for a six-day visit at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. She has already visited Nanjing and Shanghai since she arrived on the mainland on Tuesday.
