The Legislative Council's Finance Committee has approved 1.8 billion dollars' worth of diesel subsidies allocated to commercial vehicles.

Some lawmakers are concerned about how to ensure that the measure doesn't end up funding oil companies.

The government has proposed four measures to tackle rising fuel prices -- they include offering diesel-powered commercial vehicles a 3 dollar-per-litre subsidy and a 50-percent discount in government tunnel fees for commercial vehicles.

This as some lawmakers questioned how the scheme can truly benefit motorists.

Lawmaker Chan Siu-hung from the Election Committee was concerned how the subsidies might end up in the pockets of oil companies instead of those who are in need, while Lawmaker Ng Chau-pei from the Hong Kong Island East constituency stressed he does not want to see fuel suppliers take advantage of the war in the Middle East to make a profit.

In response, Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong said the government will ensure that the subsidies will only be used for assisting users.

Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan emphasised authorities are keeping track of the global oil market, adding that oil companies will not be able to raise prices in a way that takes advantage of the government's measure.

The relief package was approved with the implementation of the measure set to take place as soon as the end of this month.
