President Xi Jinping meets leader of Taiwan’s Kuomintang Cheng Li-wun

President Xi Jinping, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, has met with Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of Taiwan's largest opposition party Kuomintang. The meeting took place at about 11:00 AM at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. After shaking hands and exchanging greetings, Xi said that the roots of Taiwanese compatriots are on the mainland, and the trend of closer ties between compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait will not change. Xi said the meeting between the leaders of the two parties today is to safeguard the common peace of both sides of the Strait and to ensure that future generations can share a bright future. Xi said: “We are willing to work with the KMT, along with all political parties and groups in Taiwan, and people from all walks of life, to strengthen exchanges and dialogue under the political basis of adhering to the "Two Consensus" and opposing Taiwan independence, in order to seek peace across the Strait, well-being for compatriots, and rejuvenation for the nation.
