The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is preparing a five-year research project, focusing on Chinese seniors to unlock science behind a long -- and healthy life. HKUST's five-year research project is poised to recruit and track 500 ethnic-Chinese elderly people aged 90 or above. Helmed by UST President Nancy Ip, the team will collect information on participants' lifestyle habits through questionnaires for analysis. Alongside multiple blood tests and health check-ups as well as analysis platforms and AI models, the team hopes to identify biomarkers and molecular pathways behind a long and healthy life. HKUST Research Assistant Professor, Division of Life Science WONG HIU-YI: "We are reaching a super-aging population, our healthcare system has been doing very well in maintaining the healthiness of all the elderly in Hong Kong. We'll still need to have a more thorough look at current medical conditions in general." Participating seniors must be able to clearly express their consent to take part. HKUST Research Assistant Professor, Division of Life Science WONG HIU-YI: "One of the most important points is whether they are capable to sign a consent. So it means that they have to be mentally capable to understand our study." HKUST says the findings are expected to lay the groundwork for future personalised disease-risk prediction and health management strategies, ultimately supporting the pursuit of healthy longevity. Another goal is to establish a biosample database with long-lived Chinese seniors. They hope to systematically identify factors linked with healthy longevity, especially those factors that can be changed and improved.
