Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Monday investigations were underway into an alleged "sabotage operation" along a gas pipeline between his country and Serbia.

It comes after Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that explosives were found along the pipeline which transports gas from Serbia to Hungary.

Orban thanked the Serbian authorities for their effective action, and said the Hungarian army had been deployed to protect the network.

The discovery comes as Orban's party is trailing in opinion polls ahead of next Sunday's crucial elections.

The Hungarian opposition accused Orban of "panic-mongering" and some analysts said the incident could be a "staged operation" to arouse sympathy for Orban's party.
