Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law said the government has increased subsidy for Art Basel. Law said the measure could bring added economic benefits to Hong Kong.

The government has signed a five-year collaboration contract with Art Basel. Speaking on a TVB programme, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law said the government has enhanced subsidy for the art fair. While Law did not reveal the details, she stressed that the subsidy would bring added benefits.

Referring to "Art March" as an example, when roughly 4.35 million visitors arrived in Hong Kong, the secretary said mega art events had helped generate economic benefits, such as from collectors who came for Art Basel, who would stay for several days while attending other activities.

Law also said authorities would focus on promoting art development -- one of the key performance indicators, or KPI, stated in the hosting-right agreement with Art Basel.

Responding to comments that the government has not organised sufficient sports events at the Kai Tak Sports Park to meet their KPIs,Law said they might need to review the indicators. She added that an indoor car racing event could be a new activity to be held at the sports park.
