Senior general Min Aung Hlaing elected as Myanmar's president

Myanmar's junta chief Min Aung Hlaing has secured over half of the parliamentary votes to become the 11th president of the Southeast Asian country, formalising his grip on power for the next five years.
The 69-year-old senior general stepped down from the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services on March 30th because the Myanmar constitution prohibits the president from simultaneously holding the top military position.
On Friday, he won 429 out of the 584 votes cast by representatives of the Presidential Electoral College, overwhelmingly passing the threshold required to win the election.
Min Aung Hlaing was among three candidates nominated for the post this week.
The two runners-up, U Nyo Saw and Nan Ni Ni Aye, will serve under him as vice presidents.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping extended congratulations on Min Aung Hlaing's election victory and expressed willingness to work together to strengthen strategic communication and deepen political mutual trust.
