In the US, Pam Bondi stepped down from her position as Attorney General as she faced widespread backlash for the Department of Justice's handling of files linked to the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking investigation. Media reports say discussions are ongoing in the White House about more senior officials leaving the administration. Pam Bondi became the second cabinet member of the Trump administration to be removed from her post recently, following the firing of Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in March. In a statement announcing Bondi's departure, US President Donald Trump lauded her as a "Great American Patriot and a loyal friend" who had overseen a "massive crackdown in crime." He said she would be transitioning to a role in the private sector. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, one of Trump's former personal lawyers, was immediately installed to lead the Justice Department temporarily. Bondi, in a post on X, wrote serving as attorney general has been her honour of a lifetime. Trump was reportedly frustrated by Bondi's handling of the "Epstein files," which has become a political liability for the Republican president, and that she has fallen short with efforts to investigate or prosecute enough of perceived Trump foes. 60-year-old Bondi, a former Florida attorney general, had vowed she would not play politics with the Justice Department. Yet, her tenure was shadowed by criticism over her "weaponising" the DoJ to do Trump's bidding, including large-scale firing of prosecutors deemed insufficiently loyal to the president. Under her leadership, the institution moved aggressively to investigate into a string of Trump's political opponents such as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and former FBI Director James Comey. The turmoil resulted in resignations of hundreds of employees.
