Today is Good Friday -- the Christian holy day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

At the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV has called for humility and peace as this year's Holy Week unfolds amid the Middle East War.

A Maundy Thursday tradition at the Vatican as Pope Leo XIV washes the feet of 12 priests, commemorating Jesus' washing and kissing the feet of the 12 apostles during the Last Supper -- symbolic of both humility and love, but also of redemption and spiritual cleansing.

In his homily at the St. John Lateran Cathedral, the U.S.-born Pope exhorts compassion for the beleaguered.

As humanity is brought to its knees by so many acts of brutality, let us too kneel down alongside the oppressed.

In this way, we seek to follow the Lord's example.

Leo's predecessor Pope Francis revolutionised the rite for the Vatican to emphasise inclusion across society, including both women and people of other faiths among the 12 being washed.

This year's foot-washing rite at the Vatican saw a return to a more conventional format following Pope Leo's decision to return to tradition and reinforce his appreciation of the clergy.

As the Holy Week unfolds amid the Middle East war, the pontiff has called for unity and peace "in this dark hour of history" stressing that "no good can come from the abuse of power."
