Politburo member Ma Xingrui is under investigations for suspected serious discipline and law violations.
The 66-year-old Shandong native was a professor and later the vice president at Harbin Institute of Technology.
He was later appointed Director of the China National Space Administration and the China Atomic Energy Authority.
He was later named Party Secretary of Shenzhen and Governor of Guangdong before taking up the role as the Party Secretary of Xinjiang in 2021.
He was absent at the two sessions in March.
