Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne is travelling to China this week to foster closer strategic and economic ties with Canada's second-largest single-country trading partner.

The Finance Ministry in Beijing said the visit would take place from April 1st to 4th.

Speaking to media, Champagne indicated supply-chain integrity would be raised during meetings.

Champagne is expected to engage with high-level Chinese officials in the financial sector as well as business leaders to build strategic partnerships and attract new investments "as part of Canada's broader diversification imperative."

The countries' two-way merchandise trade totalled 124.8 billion US dollars last year.

His office said the trip builds on momentum from the meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Xi Jinping earlier in January.

Under the terms of a trade deal signed by the two leaders, Ottawa will allow 49 thousand Chinese electric vehicles to enter Canada with a favourable tariff rate of 6.1 percent, down from the previous 100 percent.

Beijing has suspended anti-discrimination tariffs on Canadian canola seed and other agricultural products until the end of 2026.
