A report published by World Trade Organization shows Hong Kong ranked as the world's fifth-largest trading entity in merchandise trade in 2025 -- two places up from the year before.

In the report "Global Trade Outlook and Statistics," the city's total merchandise trade logged a year-on-year increase of 17.5 percent to 1,585 billion US dollars, accounting for 3 percent of the world's total.

That's ranked after China, the United States, Germany and the Netherlands.

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau says despite geopolitical challenges, Hong Kong's external trade remained resilient and achieved an encouraging result.

Merchandise exports continued to show strong performance in early 2026.

In February, the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods rose nearly 25 percent and 30 percent respectively.
