US President Donald Trump said the United States is close to achieving its core objectives in the conflict with Iran, as he pledged to intensify military strikes in the coming two to three weeks. Trump said US forces had delivered “swift, decisive and overwhelming” victories, claiming Iran’s military capabilities had been significantly degraded. He said Iran’s ability to launch missiles and drones had been “dramatically curtailed”, while senior leadership figures had been killed. “America is winning — and winning bigger than ever before,” he said. Trump added that Washington’s strategic objectives were “nearing completion”, but warned that the US would hit Iran “extremely hard” over the next two to three weeks. He also said the US did not necessarily need a formal agreement with Tehran to end the conflict, insisting Iran would not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. On global trade, Trump said responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz could be shared with other countries, including China, France, Japan and South Korea, while warning Iran against disrupting the vital shipping route. The conflict — referred to by US officials as “Operation Epic Fury” — has left at least 13 American service members dead and around 200 wounded since joint US-Israel strikes began.
