One of the defendants in this case is pregnant. The Correctional Services Department has mechanisms to handle childbirth in custody. Female inmates are mainly held at Tai Lam Centre for Women. In general, once a pregnancy reaches around 30 weeks, specialised arrangements are made for the inmate to be admitted to the institution's hospital, where on-site doctors and trained correctional staff provide both antenatal and postnatal care. Under Hong Kong law, children born to inmates may remain with their mothers in custody until the mother completes her sentence or until the child reaches the age of three.
