Iran's Foreign Ministry said a 15-point ceasefire proposal put forward by the US had been received and was filled with "excessive" demands.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, told reporters at a news briefing in Tehran. "What has been communicated by the US, whatever you may call it, 15-points or more or less, are a set of very excessive, unrealistic and irrational demands."

Baghaei also claimed that the US was "continuously using its military bases in Iran's neighbouring countries."

Gulf Arab states repeatedly have said the US is not launching attacks from their territory against Iran.

Baghaei also talked about tensions with Lebanon. "Our embassy in Lebanon is active," he told reporters.

Lebanon had declared Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Reza Shibani "persona non grata" in an effort to weaken Iran's diplomatic presence and have a charge d'affairs at its embassy instead. But the deadline to leave the country was Sunday.

He said Iran's ambassador, following remarks made by relevant Lebanese bodies and the conclusions reached, will continue his mission in Beirut and he is still there.

It was not clear what Lebanon would might do next or how diplomatic relations might be affected.

The Iranian ambassador is reportedly in the embassy, where he is believed to have diplomatic immunity.

Baghaei also reiterated that Iran was not seeking a nuclear weapon.

US President Donald Trump earlier claimed a deal with Iran to end the war "could be soon."

He said: "I do see a deal in Iran. Yeah. Could be soon. I just have lots of alternatives. We have, tremendous numbers of ships over there. We don't need them all because of, you know, the power. Look, I would say we're just like, we're ahead of schedule and the ballroom in a much bigger way, we're ahead of schedule with Iran. We're weeks ahead of schedule."

"If you would have said that in three days, we were going to knock out 158 ships, their entire Navy, which we did. We knocked out their entire Air force. We knocked out most of their missiles. That's why you see missile attacks. But they're down to, they're sputtering."
