Two US senators have proposed a bill to prohibit the federal government from buying and operating Chinese-made humanoid robots while barring the use of federal funds in connection with the robots.

The US Senate Republican Conference Chairman Tom Cotton and Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the chamber, introduced the American Security Robotics Act.

It seeks to ban unmanned ground vehicles like humanoid robots and remote surveillance vehicles developed by companies from countries deemed as adversaries such as China.

The bipartisan pair argued in a statement Thursday that these humanoid robots could pose "a national security risk," and alleged they could contain backdoors that will make room for unauthorised access to American user data to send it back to China or be remotely controlled.

But the bill would contain exemptions for the US military and law enforcement agencies to study Chinese robots, provided that the robots cannot transmit data from China.
