Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of the 14th ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization held in Yaounde, Cameroon.

He stressed China is willing to strengthen multilateral and regional economic and trade cooperation with the United States during the meeting.

Wang expressed grave concerns on Thursday regarding Washington's new Section 301 probes into "overcapacity" and alleged failure to ban forced-labour products that signal the possibility of fresh tariffs.

He told Greer that economic and trade ties should continue to serve as the ballast stone and propeller of Sino-US relations, rather than a stumbling block or a point of conflict.

He also highlighted the necessity for the two sides to implement the two leaders' important consensus reached during their Busan summit and phone conversations, and look forward together while properly handling the relationship between competition and cooperation.

Greer contended the US is also willing to enhance communication and exchanges with China under the WTO and regional frameworks.

He called previous rounds of consultations with Chinese counterparts "constructive".
