Customs arrested two employees of a chain fitness centre, suspected of intimidating customers into signing contracts and misusing their mobile phones to apply for loans.

The two suspects, a 30-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, were handcuffed, hooded and escorted away by customs officers. The fitness centre involved is located on Soy Street in Mong Kok.

Customs had earlier received reports from two citizens who said they had been approached on the street by gym staff claiming they had "won" a free physical checkup. After being taken to the centre, the victims were allegedly forced to sign fitness contracts and make payments before being allowed to leave.

During the sales process, the employees also reportedly used the victims' phones to register for online bank credit cards, collect facial and personal data, and apply for loans totaling 190,000 dollars.

The two employees were arrested for engaging in aggressive commercial practices under the Trade Descriptions Ordinance.
