A passenger opened the rear emergency exit of an MTR train that was travelling from Kowloon Tong toward Tai Wai Station along the East Rail Line in the late afternoon.

He then walked along the train tracks before being found semi-unconscious an hour later.

He allegedly suffered from an electric shock.

The incident led to the suspension of train services between Mong Kok East and Tai Wai Stations for most of the late afternoon and early evening.

Normal services have since resumed.

After the initial incident, passengers could be seen evacuating from a northbound East Rail line train at Kowloon Tong Station with firefighters and paramedics on standby.

MTR staff members were deployed into the tunnel.

Police say they received two separate reports at around 4 p.m. from Tai Wai and Kowloon Tong Stations respectively that a man attempted to enter the driver's cabin.

The MTR Corporation, meanwhile, says according to preliminary information a man opened the emergency exit on a train and entered the tracks.

The man was found in the tunnel shortly before 6 p.m. between Kowloon Tong and Tai Wai Stations.

Former MTR engineer Gary Zhang says emergency exits at both ends of the train are designed strictly for evacuation.

Once the door is opened, the train automatically enters an emergency state and cannot be restarted.

Under the MTR by-laws, passengers must not forcibly open train doors or emergency exits without authorisation unless in genuine emergencies.

Offenders face a maximum fine of 5,000 dollars.
