Residents will be able to quench their thirst for massive water gun fights at the annual Thai Songkran festival set to be held in Kowloon City between the 11th and 12th of April. Similar to previous years, organisers have arranged the water gun fights to be held within Carpenter Road Park. Organised by the Kowloon City District Office of the Home Affairs Department as well as the local district council and various other sectors, this year's Songkran festival, also known as Thai New Year, will take place between the 11th and 12th of next month primarily within Carpenter Road Park. In a bid to encourage residents to spend more during their visit, the event included a special discount measure whereby visitors can get a 10 dollar voucher specified for venues at the Thai festival for every 200 dollars they spend at designated stores. While the annual event offers a variety of activities ranging from Muay Thai performances, traditional dances to regional delicacies from the Southeast Asian nation, Songkran is perhaps most famous for its large-scale water gun fights. As per the practice over the past few years, the regulated water gun fights will take place within Carpenter Road Park, but the local district council stressed the parade and other water-related activities organised by the Thai community will take place outside of the designated venue. Ideally, we will have them all in the basketball court. But of course we also have the parade section, which is run by the Thai community which has been going on for years. So, we do help them do the roadblocks, we do help them communicate with the government and police on the actual parade. But whether the Thai community does the water splashing themselves, that's another situation that we're not familiar with. Revellers of this year's Songkran festival will be able to acquire Thai-themed souvenirs at the nearby Kowloon Walled City Park after finishing the traditional water gun fights in the basketball court of Carpenter Road Park. Local district councillors hope to further promote Thai culture which has been a staple of Kowloon City's culture.
